Getting good rest doesn’t always come easy. The major causes of sleep disorders can range from medication to worries to illness to stress or even the consumption of certain foods causes sleep to be a very evasive thing. No matter the cause, we need a remedy. And quick.

Finding natural ways to get and stay asleep can be challenging. In full transparency, in the past, I’ve had to turn to doctor prescribed medication just to try and catch some zzzzzz’s. I don’t like going this route as I prefer more natural alternative methods to medication.

That’s why I love this formula. It’s a floral, citrus blend that is calming and relaxing, perfect for bedtime. Or even naptime. It’s typically safe for most individuals but definitely consult a doctor for your particular needs.

Sleep deprivation is no joke. Lack of sleep affects the brain dramatically. One can experience nausea, headaches, dizziness, lack of appetite, and even hallucinations. This one, I know of first hand. There have been times I have been so sleep deprived that I could swear I seen something in the road or a shadow next to me or in the hallway.

Honestly, it’s pretty scary. My hope is that this formula will help you as it has helped me. The items you’ll need are

  • a roller ball

  • distilled water or witch hazel

  • favorite carrier oil

  • sweet orange essential oil

  • chamomile essential oil

  • lavender essential oil

  • tangerine essential oil

  • ylang ylang essential oil

Roller balls are a super convenient way to use essential oils. You can take them just about anywhere and they even fit in most pockets. I have used this brand for a while and have been quite happy with them. I’ve given them as gifts too!

Distilled water is best to use in this recipe. If you use tap water, make sure to boil it to try and eliminate various toxins or possible bacteria that might be lurking.

Sweet Orange Essential Oil is a staple in my home. I use it in my diffuser, baths, roller ball blends, and I am currently working on inhalers. (Recipes soon to come :)) Sweet Orange is a scent that can be uplifting and calming at the same time. I find it one that relaxes and heals. And it smells so incredibly good.

Chamomile Essential Oil is known for it’s relaxing abilities. The floral scent revives and calms simultaneously. This flower is also excellent in oil infusions when making your own body products. Check out The Nerdy Farm Wife’s recipe for Soothing Chamomile Lip Balm.

Lavender Essential Oil is such an amazing essential oil. It can heal scars, calm the skin, calm the mind and makes an excellent bug repellent. So many body nighttime bath products include Lavender in their formulas.

Tangerine Essential Oil is similar to Sweet Orange Essential Oil in the citrusy aspects. This oil is excellent for cleaning and clearing the mind. It’s also fantastic for acne or those prone to oily skin.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil has many benefits which include relieving tension, bringing harmony to the mind, and is great for strengthening the hair. The slightly sweet floral smell whisks you away to a peaceful meadow. (How’s that picture for inducing sleep?)

Some recommended carrier oils might include jojoba oil, almond oil, coconut oil, or even grapeseed oil.

Now that you’ve got your ingredients, let’s make this lovely sleep blend.

Got Sleep? Roller Ball Blend


  • 4 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil

  • 2 drops Chamomile Essential Oil

  • 2 drops Lavender Essential Oil

  • 2 drops Tangerine Essential Oil

  • 1 drop Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

  • 1/4 tsp of your favorite carrier oil

-Put the 1/4 tsp carrier oil in your roller ball, add the essential oils, and fill with distilled water or witch hazel. Gently mix and apply at bedtime to bottom of feet and/or sides of neck. If you apply to the bottom of your feet, use caution as it may be slippery. Sleep peacefully!
