absorption and exposure
The environmental toxins surrounding us effect children in many ways. Children absorb toxic particles at a much faster rate than adults. Children have a faster metabolic rate as well as a faster respiratory rate. Due to their lightning-fast metabolic rate, children are more prone to cell mutations. The cells divide faster than that of an adult. On the flip side, children may also have an improved rate of healing.
The respiratory system of children operates at an accelerated rate compared to adults. Since kids breathe in and out more quickly, they are prone to breathing in more unhealthy toxins. In addition, children's skin is more permeable, which means it absorbs applied products and toxins more rapidly. In fact, drugs applied to the skin absorb at a rate close to two and a half times faster in newborns than adults.
Now that you've learned a bit about the absorption of toxins in children, let's go over the 9 ways toxins affect children, including possible causes of exposure.
If you've been anywhere on the internet, you've seen the enormous amount of posts regarding children and food. Whether it's about allergies or sensitivities to food, there's always something new online concerning our health. With that being said, it's important to note, babies can actually be sensitized to food in the womb and breastfed babies can receive allergenic food molecules from their mother.
Furthermore, food dyes appear to cross the blood-brain barrier more freely in children than in adults. Particular food additives and preservatives can actually affect children's nervous systems. We've all seen how candy can get children all hyped up at birthday parties, right?
Oh, yes. Water can be incredibly harmful to children. Tap water, that is. There are countless toxins in water and children tend to drink two and a half times more water than adults. Chemicals are absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract at a higher rate. If there are microorganisms, such as intestinal parasites in the water, children are more apt to be affected by them.
Actually, pertaining to intestinal disorders, we went through something related a couple years ago with our oldest son. He kept complaining that his stomach hurt. Well, we had to get a fecal sample (you know those are always fun),and come to find out, he had H. Pylori, a type of bacteria that affects the stomach lining.
In fact, most people actually have this but not all people show symptoms. Click here to read more about H. Pylori.
Children and adults that work in daycare centers have a higher rate of parasite incidence. Just something to watch out for!
Let's face it, the air quality around us is bad. There is smog galore, pesticide sprays, cigarette smoke, and more swirling around in the atmosphere. Air pollution is prevalent everywhere and since the little ones breathe in and out at a faster rate, they are typically breathing in tons environmental toxins.
When children play outside, they are exposed to air pollutants such as exhaust which hovers close to the ground. These types of air pollutants can exacerbate asthma and cigarette smoke exposure increases the probability of getting a respiratory infection by 50%.
4. Plants and Organisms
Many plants and organisms are outside where children typically play. Children can be exposed to pollen, dust, mold, and more. Due to exposure of these things, either outside or inside the home, children can develop symptoms that affect them from sleeping well. Alternatively, they could even suffer from allergies.
Unfortunately, lots of the foods we buy in the grocery store are treated with chemicals that get eaten. If you are able to grow your own food, I highly recommend it. It tastes better, is free from pesticides and you become more self-sustainable.
Similarly, dirt often contains parasites that live in the soil. But we can't tell our children not to play in the dirt, can we? It's part of growing up, you know, mud pies and all. The downside is that infections become an issue.
By the same token, mold is a very serious issue that can cause serious respiratory issues requiring hospitalization and even resulting in death due to organ failure. Keeping your home free of mold is highly important for your family's health. 5. Chemicals and Metals
We've already discussed how easily children's skin absorb applied products, well the same goes for chemicals and even some metals. Lead poisoning is a major cause for concern among little ones. Children are more sensitive to all kinds of solvents, paints, paint thinners, and fumes of these products. Likewise, furniture polish is an item that should also be watched out for.
Children playing on the floor in the home or even the garage are exposed to the products that have been put on the floor. Lawn chemicals should be avoided if possible as they can be ingested and absorbed as well. It's no wonder many families are turning to all-natural ways of cleaning, cooking, and living in general. There are many resources out there for a more "green" way of living.
6. Noise, Weather, and Altitude
Noise is something that children are exposed to since birth, provided they are not deaf or hard of hearing. This is a type of environmental toxin that can be damaging to the ears. Even in utero, the fetus can be exposed to things that affect the hearing. Toys are often very loud, church services, rock concerts, and the T.V. all provide possible ways for noise to become a toxin for children.
When it comes to the weather, children are more susceptible to hot and cold. Winter can be toxic due to the vulnerability to cold. In summer, dehydration can be detrimental and often juice or milk is given instead of water. Interestingly, children who are dehydrated cry without tears and have a low urine output.
Altitude can affect adults and children in similar ways but children are more prone to getting sick due to the altitude. The lack of oxygen can cause hypoxia, which is a decrease in oxygen reaching body tissue. This is toxic for anyone especially a child. Tachycardia and headache are possible results from hypoxia.
7. Radiation, Electromagnetic fields, and geopathic stress
The toxins in this list are closer than you think. Sun radiation can be extremely harmful for children. A sunscreen should always be used. I recoemmend an all-natural one becuase again the absorption rate in kiddos is super high. Electromagnetic energy is put off by appliances, television sets, phones, etc. These items put off a type of current that negatively affects children. And adults for that matter.
Ok, so what the heck is Geopathic stress. This is an invisible toxin that can affect health. It is a localized geomagnetic disturbance caused by tectonic fissures, dislocations, faults and underground wtaer sources. There is a vertical magnetic field that runs from earth to the sky and emits "stress."
I know it sounds crazy but scientists who have studied this contribute many ailments to this invisible toxins. What's more, this may actually affect why you can't grow plants in a certain area or why cows won't graze in a particular area.
8. Natural Body Functions
Our bodies are made to run smoothly and naturally but oftentimes, our daily functions can be disrupted. Toxins that affect this normal functioning include excess production or imbalance of metabolic rate products. These include things such as improper exercise or lack of nutritious food.
These imbalances affect the neurotransmitters in the brain which ultimately affect the behavior of children. Ensuring your child, even as little as babies get proper exercise and have a good diet filled with a variety of foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are simple ways to help children operate at their best.
9. Toxins of the mind and spirit
Children are so precious and they sometimes have to go through things much too difficult for their little minds and bodies to deal with. Toxins in the area include a negative home or school life. Children often suffer from poor grades, lack of sleep, weight loss or weight gain, psychological problems and more.
The relationships that we have with others in our lives can dramatically affect our children. Good or bad, kids take something away from all parents. By eliminating the negative people or circumstances in our lives, we can help rid our children of toxins that affect their minds and spirits. It's important to not criticize, condemn or belittle children as this brings about a negtive self-image and a poor sense of self.
Ultimately, this type of toxin can turn a loving, kind child into an unproductive and unhappy adult.
9 ways that toxins affect children
Alright, now that we've learned what 9 ways that toxins affect our children, let's go over some ways to try and help our children detoxify. I promise this part won't be near as long.
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor nor an aromatherapist. Please consult your child's doctor for expert advice. Use essential oils with caution. Read my full disclaimer here.
6 Ways to help your child detoxify
1. A healthy diet can go a long way in ridding your child's body of toxins. Certain foods act as detoxifiers themselves. For instance, tomatoes have been shown to fight cancer cells or grapefruit can help detoxify the liver. Whole, raw foods are the best way to go and limiting sugar will surely help the brain.
2. Limit screen time. I work in the school system and I see how much time these kids spend on the screen at school so I can only imagine how much exposure they are receiving if they also get screen time at home.
3. Treat your children to Epsom salt bath. Epsom salts have been used for decades to eliminate toxins from the body. They are useful for sprains and you can even feed your plants with it. Please use caution and an appropriate amount for a child.
4. Essential Oils are a natural way to deliver a boost of immunity or calm for anyone. There are some safe for children and some that should never be used on children. Please do your research about essential oils but I am a big fan of their benefits. You can view my topical essential oils posts starting here.
5. Limit use of chemicals in and around the home. Also, try to buy organic products when you can. That way danger is at a minimum.
6. Get rid of the negative influences. Work on your own self-improvement. When you feel good, you want the same for others, especially your children.
