Who Does God Say You Are?

Too often we struggle with our identity or lack thereof. It is only when we turn to God and His truth, can we discover who are meant to be.

God has provided us with a book that tells us exactly whose we are, how and why we were created. Unfortunately, we get caught up in who we are not and the many ways we fall short or don’t measure up to others.

I know I’m guilty of this. I see others and think how talented or gifted they are, what a great mother they are or what a great body they have. As women, it seems we are always comparing ourselves to others.

Well, I’m here to say no more. God has created you on purpose and for a purpose and He can and wants to do amazing things through you, if you will be a willing vessel.

When it comes to being hard on oneself, I can say that I fit the bill perfectly. Growing up, I never fit in anywhere so I always thought something was wrong with me and then even as an adult, I still find it hard to make friends.

So, this of course, led me to be extremely hard on myself, always questioning what I was doing wrong, why people didn’t like me, the list goes on and on.

Then getting married and having children, I took on the identities of “mom” and “wife.” While these identities are valid and important, I realize that these are not my only identities. I am a follower of Christ, first and foremost, as well as a light to the world.

Learning to identify who we are in Him is what changes our heart. It’s only then can we learn to accept that we were created for more.

Past Confusion

Even though I accepted Christ at 14 and I knew He cared for me and I was created in His image, it never really sunk in until later in life. Once I realized that I was more than a conqueror, loved beyond measure, NO MATTER WHAT I DID OR HAD DONE, my life changed.

The thing is, God never changes. Therefore, neither does His love. It is unconditional and without restriction. We are told in Romans 5:8 that He loved us while we were still sinners.

So, if that’s true, then we have to figure out a way to accept that despite our faults and short comings, we have someone who will never leave nor forsake us.

For some, this can be incredibly difficult. If you have been told as a child that you will never amount to anything or that you are worthless or that you can’t do anything right, you have more than likely been living the majority of your life without self-doubt and low self-esteem.

Maybe you grew up thinking that only if you got good grades or played sports, then, you were worth something. Maybe you grew up in a household where you were told you are not special or important or needed.

Please know that this is not true.

God says that you are loved without bounds and that you can do all things through Him (Philippians 4:13). The enemy is the one who wants you to believe otherwise. Just look at this list of affirmations of who God says you are.

  • You are born again

  • You are loved unconditionally

  • You are important

  • You are worth something

  • You have been bought with a price

  • You are victorious

  • You are more than a conqueror

  • You are a child of God

  • You are strong

  • There is no one like you

  • You are made whole through Him

Stop Believing The Lies

If you were set apart with a purpose (Deuteronomy 4:8), then there’s nothing really stopping you. You’ve got God, the Creator of the universe behind you at every turn, at every step. He doesn’t promise an easy life but He promises to stay with us throughout it all.

I know how it feels to live the majority of your life believing that you not enough, that you will always be a failure, and that you’re “too much” and that’s why people don’t like you.

Well, that is totally false. We are all made differently and exactly how God wants us to be. You are unique and valuable. There is NO one like you and you can make a difference in someone’s life. No matter what you’ve been told.

When we finally decide to take a stand and realize our worth, our lives are changed. The lies that play over and over in your head need to be eliminated for good. But how? How do we take charge of these false words and begin to walk in freedom from them?

The Bible

The Bible is your first line of defense against the lies and accusations that the enemy throws at you (Tweet this). The Bible has an endless amount of hope and encouragement to fuel a new thought process. Simply open it up and start reading.

You will see how God has never failed His people. That His faithfulness has stood the test of time. You will find scripture after scripture of Him proclaiming just how much He loves us. He cares for us beyond all understanding or comprehension.

Take these scriptures for example

  • John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

  • Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved—”

  • Psalm 86:15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”

  • Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

  • Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.”

This is only a list of five scriptures. The Bible contains so many more reassuring scriptures.

Our minds are very powerful and trying to change a mindset that has been with us for years, can take some work. I’ve got a strategy that has proved to be extremely effective in conditioning the mind to being open to change while creating permanent changes.

It’s called R.A.P (Read, Apply, Practice).

It’s reading the material (or listening to it, such as a podcast or audio book), applying it to your specific situation and/or circumstance and then putting it into practice. It’s like this…

I read a scripture that says God is rich in mercy and because of His great love has made me alive in Christ.

Now, if that’s true and I have always been a person who has been down and out with no joy, then I can lift my head high (Apply) knowing that even while I was a sinner, He loved me.

To put this into practice, you must be intentional. For example, I literally take time to physically lift my head and walk as a child of God. I make extra effort to acknowledge that I do not have to live down and out. I have been bought with a price even if my horrible, weakened, messed up state.

It is making a conscious effort to change the mind. But as stated before, if you would be a willing vessel, God can do anything through you.

It can be helpful to set a timer on your phone to remind you to lift your head throughout the day until it becomes habit.

Believe me, it works.

Keep The Faith

So what do you do after you’ve begun to implement these ideas and you see your life begin to change? It’s important to make sure to stay in your word every day. I encourage you to follow a reading plan. You can find great ones on the Flourishing Today website.

The enemy will try to come and steal what God has done and is doing in your life. Be aware that he will try to destroy any progress that you have made. Remember God is your source of strength and if He says you can do this, then you can!

It’s important to create an active routine in keeping your prayer life alive along with your Bible reading. When we are in the presence of the Holy One, we cannot help but be changed. His glorious light fills us and makes us whole.

We do not lack anything when we stay in His presence. No fear can overcome. No doubt can enter our minds. No worries, stress, or anxiety can stand against the Lord Jesus. His great love and grace has provided us with the tools we need to walk in victory.

He says we are more than conquerors and that we are loved with an unconditional love so let’s put this into practice every day knowing that while we may fail Him, He will never fail us.

Let His light and love surpass those negative thoughts and change you into the mighty warrior you were called to be.

Fight and stay strong, you were made on purpose and for a purpose. Let that soak in your spirit and rejoice because you are a child of God.

Do you have a need? How can I pray for you?

Have a blessed day
